Still Serving in Defense of the Nation

Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) Robert (Bob) Wordell, USAF(R) passed away on 27 April 2017. CMSgt Wordell served as DIA’s first Senior Enlisted Leader (SLE) from January 1983-April 1985 during the tenure of DIA Director LTG James A. Williams, USA.

After joining the USAF in 1952, CMSgt Wordell served in the Korean War as an airborne cryptographic operator. He demonstrated courage under fire when he and his crew were shot down near Chinnampo, North Korea, and eventually rescued by the United Nations forces. In addition to his tours in Korea and DIA, CMSgt Wordell served in Europe, Asia, Africa and various locations across the US. CMSgt Wordell’s tour at DIA concluded his 33-year military career in April of 1985.

A visitation was held for CMSgt Wordell on Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at the Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA. Funeral Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at 1100 on Thursday, 5 October 2017 at Arlington National Cemetery.
