Still Serving in Defense of the Nation

MICHAEL LEON WARDINSKI, COL, USA (Ret.), of Alexandria, on October 24, 2014, at the age of 86. Beloved husband of 59 years to Nancy Wardinski; caring father of Michael Wardinski, Jr., Kathleen (Dennis) Seliquini, Bruce (Christine) Wardinski, and Paul (Anne) Wardinski; dear grandfather of Anthony, Lauren, Kristen, Michael, Scott, Brandon, Tyler, Catherine, and Lisa; and great-grandfather of Miley and Quinn. Mike was born in Chicago, Illinois. He dropped out of high school, but would earn not only his high school equivalency diploma but also a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and a PhD. He also attended all four armed services' war colleges as either a resident or by correspondence. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring as a Colonel after 33 years and going "green to gold". He served abroad in Japan and Germany, fought in wars in Korea and Vietnam, and was active in intelligence during the Cold War with the Pentagon and Defense Intelligence Agency. Mike was a former Toastmasters' governor, a member of the Knights of Columbus and MOAA, and very involved with the Catholic Church at Ft. Belvoir. Relatives and friends are welcome on Tuesday, November 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Woodlawn Chapel, 1801 Wright Road, Building 1801, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060. Interment with Full Military Honors at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mike's memory to The Walter Reed Society, (www.walterreedsociety.org).
